Bollywood’s Surrogacy and IVF Stories: Celebrating Mothers and Journeys

Increased social acceptance has made surrogacy and IVF a common practice in India and the rest of the world. Many Bollywood celebrities and public figures have opted for IVF and surrogacy to make their dream of becoming a parent come true.

In the past decade, a lot of Bollywood celebrities benefited from IVF and surrogacy to become parents. Yes, you read that right! Read on to discover Bollywood celebrities and actors who chose IVF or surrogacy for parenthood.

Below are some of the famous Bollywood celebrities who adopted surrogacy or IVF to become parents: 

Farah Khan & Shirish Kunder

Bollywood famous choreographer and director, Farah Khan was one of the few who openly talked about the benefits of IVF. In 2008, Farah Khan gave birth to triplets (Anya, Diva, and Czar) through IVF at the age of 43.

Once Farah Khan openly said, “I became an IVF mom at 43 and I am glad I did so.”

Shah Rukh Khan & Gauri Khan

The next on our list of surrogacy parents in Bollywood is no one other than the king of Bollywood. Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan welcomed their 3rd child AbRam Khan through surrogacy when the couple was in their 40s.

Once Shah Rukh Khan said, “Amidst all the noise that has been going around, the sweetest is the one made by our newborn baby, AbRam. He was born prematurely by several months, but has finally come home.”

Amir Khan & Kiran Rao

Known as Mr. Perfectionist in Bollywood, Amir Khan had two children from his first wife in the past. He and his second wife Kiran Rao were very open about their struggle with miscarriage. Kiran Rao gave birth to Azad through IVF surrogacy in 2011.

Amir Khan once said, “This baby is especially dear to us because he was born to us after a long wait and some difficulty. We were advised to have a baby through IVF surrogacy, and we feel very grateful to the Almighty that all has gone well.”

Shilpa Shetty & Raj Kundra

Famous television personality and Indian actress Shilpa Shetty tied the knot with British Businessman and part-time actor Raj Kundra. Shilpa Shetty gave birth to a son in 2012. The couple welcomed their daughter Samisha in 2020 via surrogacy to complete their family. 

Shilpa once said, “I waited for nearly 4 years and then, I was so irritated and we decided to try the surrogacy route. We had Samisha after three attempts. I had honestly given up on the thought of another child.”

Sunny Leone & Daniel Weber

Sunny Leone and Daniel Weber were quite vocal about their struggles with fertility. In 2017, they adopted a girl child from a small village in Maharashtra. After adopting a baby girl, Sunny Leone and her husband welcomed two boys Asher and Noah via surrogacy in 2018.

Sunny opened up about his family and said, “This is truly God’s plan! We didn’t know we were going to have a chance to have such a big beautiful family. We are beyond overjoyed and are truly blessed to have all 3 miracles in our life. Our family is complete.”

Karan Johar

Also known as the godfather of many celebrity kids, famous Bollywood director Karan Johar became a father of a girl and boy in 2017 through IVF surrogacy. In many interviews, Karan Johar has thanked the marvels of modern science and the surrogate mother for bestowing life upon him.

While talking to Hindustan Times, Karan Johar said, “My life changed since Roohi and Yash arrived. At 44, this is my biggest blockbuster. I still haven’t realized the enormity of what happened. They are only two months old. And all they do is eat, sleep, burp, wail, and poop.”

Tushar Kapoor

Like sister Ekta Kapoor, Tushar Kapoor is also a single parent. He became the father of his son Laksshya in the year 2016 through IVF surrogacy. Tushar Kapoor is among the first Indian celebs who chose to become a single father.

"Everybody in the country has been very accepting. That was a bit surprising for me because I thought there would be diverse views, some kind of 'oohs and ahas' about it, all kinds of opinions. But nothing of that sort happened. Especially the media has been so supportive of Laksshya and my choice of having a family in this manner," he said. Read his interview over here.

Krushna Abhishek & Kashmira Shah

Famous Comedian and actor Krushna Abhishek married actress Kashmira Shah in 2012. After being unable to conceive after several attempts, they went for surrogacy and became parents to twin boys.

In an interview with ETimes TV, Kashmira Shah spoke about her struggles to conceive 14 times in a span of 3 years. Post this, they opted for surrogacy.
